Sparkle is the design

Sparkle is the design element that adds the umph in Triumph and allows everyone to sigh with contentment when they enter the room. Rooms without sparkle are, well, just plain dull.

Sparkle can come from many different parts of the design:

Sparkle can come from a fixture in the space. These glass pendants from AXO come in multiple sizes and colors and sizes adding that sparkle to your project.

Sparkle can occur as an indirect effect of the light. The diachroic back of an MR16 can add sparkle to the space. Both of these examples from Tech Lighting are great illustrations.

Sometimes, a designer will use the bounce of the other materials in the room to produce the sparkle effect:

The table tops and the suspended ceiling in this photo show plenty of sparkle, from a fluorescent Peerless pendent!

The sparkle in this example is created by reflections off the wood from recessed downlights and the reflections from the decorative fixtures enhanced by the tile.

In this photo, The Sparkle comes not only from the clear pendants from Eureka Lighting, but also the fire itself.

With highly reflective trims, the designer needs to be aware of the angle of incidence, so the sparkle doesn’t become glare.

Sometimes It’s where the light is not!

Perhaps it’s because it’s the Halloween season. Perhaps because it’s fall and the days are shortening, but I’ve been thinking quite a bit lately about shadows and how we can use them in lighting design. The lack of light can be just as interesting as the light itself. Using Shadows can create visual interest in spaces that otherwise would be a plain vanilla box. Shadows can also be very detrimental to your lighting design. If you don’t see where the shadow is going to be, it can appear right where your client needs the illumination most. Shadows are something to pay attention to. There are a couple of new fixtures we have that use light and shadow to create interest.
